Cruise Itinerary

Day 1: Mandalay
Guests arriving on our group flight visit the Sagaing Hills en route to the ship, home to hundreds of monasteries and nunneries. Board the ship at Shwe Kyet Yet village near Mandalay. Enjoy an afternoon discovering the city’s key sites and traditional arts, including a visit to a family of bronze casters.

Raise a glass to the sunset at U Bein Bridge with a sumptuous champagne cocktail. Dine on Asian and Western cuisine in the elegant Restaurant, enjoying our excellent house wines or selecting an international label from our extensive list.

Day 2: Set Sail From Mandalay
Stretch out and relax at an early-morning yoga session, followed by a refreshing treat from our Healthy Juice Bar. Join a Buddhist almsgiving ceremony and experience village life near our jetty before the ship sets sail. Alight in Ava to explore the ancient capital. Take a traditional horse and cart tour or discover the sights by bike.

As the ship sails to Bagan, enjoy a range of onboard activities. Attend a talk on Myanmar culture, sample local infusions in our Burmese Tea Shop, learn how to dress in a traditional longyi or have your fortune told by an astrologer. You can also indulge in a treatment at the spa, work out in the gym or relax by the pool on the Observation Deck, the largest outdoor space of any river cruiser in Myanmar.

Day 3: Bagan
Rise early to attend a soothing meditation session before the ship arrives in Bagan. A range of tour options is available today. Choose from “Introduction to Bagan” for temples and history, “A Day in the Life” for local culture, food and markets, or “Bagan by Bicycle” for those seeking with a taste for action and adventure.

Before rejoining the ship for lunch, stroll through the small village that is home to Belmond’s private jetty near Old Bagan. You may wish to visit Belmond’s free clinic, where our onboard doctor will be treating local patients.

In the afternoon visit Ananda, one of Bagan’s most magnificent temples. Continue your tour as you explore an off-the-beaten-track temple by torchlight. End your visit by admiring the sunset over the plains. Dine under the stars at the Road to Mandalay Grill on the Observation Deck, before enjoying a classic marionette performance.

Day 4: Bagan
For an additional supplement, early rising guests can take a sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the pagodas. An early-bird breakfast is served before you disembark from Belmond Road to Mandalay for your onward travel arrangements.

Guests travelling on the group flight to Yangon will be escorted to the airport.

WHAT IS BELMOND ROAD TO MANDALAY?

Belmond Road to Mandalay is a deluxe river cruiser operated by Belmond Ltd. Fitted to the high standards you would expect from Belmond, the ship cruises the Ayeryarwady River in Myanmar.

IS BELMOND ROAD TO MANDALAY SIMILAR TO AN ‘OCEAN-GOING’ CRUISE SHIP?

No. The Belmond Road to Mandalay is more intimate, and passengers enjoy a number of opportunities to go ashore and explore Myanmar. The other main difference is in the entertainment. While you’ll see none of the cabaret shows found on cruise ships, you will enjoy a relaxing pianist, and more cultural entertainment which gives you an enhanced experience of this fascinating country.

WHAT IS THE ACCOMMODATION ON BOARD LIKE?

Passengers may select from five types of cabins – Governor’s Suite, State, Deluxe, Superior and Single.

WILL THERE BE ROOM IN MY CABIN FOR MY ALL MY LUGGAGE?

When you plan your packing, please bear in mind that all luggage must be stored in your cabin. In each cabin there is a wardrobe with hangers. There are no facilities for storage of luggage not required during your cruise. It is recommended that any excess luggage is stored at your hotel in Yangon or Bangkok.

WHAT SORT OF SERVICE CAN I EXPECT ON BOARD?

In short, dedicated. Your Hotel Manager and team of multi-lingual staff are on board to make your cruise a memorable one.

ARE ALL MY MEALS INCLUDED?

Yes. While you are on board Belmond Road to Mandalay, breakfast, lunch and dinner are included. For full details please see the Dining section of this web-site.

ARE DRINKS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE?

Alcoholic drinks are not included. Tea, regular coffee, soft drinks and bottled still water are available, complimentary at all times.

CAN YOU CATER FOR SPECIAL MEAL REQUIREMENTS?

We will do our best to cater for special dietary requirements such as vegetarian, vegan etc. provided a detailed request has been made at the time of booking. We do however regret that we are unable to provide meals requiring strict religious observance in the preparation.

ARE DISABLED PEOPLE ABLE TO TRAVEL ON BELMOND ROAD TO MANDALAY?

The ship itself and the sites visited on-shore, are not suitable for wheel-chair bound passengers or those with severe walking difficulties. Passengers with slight walking difficulties should be escorted by an able-bodied passenger.

ARE THERE ANY BEAUTY FACILITIES ON BOARD?

Our spa offers guests facials, aromatherapy massages, manicures, traditional Burmese head massage, hair wash and western styling (blowdry) etc.

IS THERE A DOCTOR ON BOARD THE SHIP?

Yes. The ship carries a doctor on board. A small fee is charged for medical services and prescriptions.

CAN I BUY SOUVENIRS OR PRESENTS ON BOARD THE SHIP?

Yes. In the on-board boutique you will find a range of lacquerware as well as traditional Burmese fabrics, silver and gold jewellery and objets d’art. There is also a range of international gifts exclusively designed for Belmond Road to Mandalay.

WILL I NEED TO TIP THE STAFF?

The price you pay for a journey aboard Belmond Road to Mandalay does not include gratuities. If a member of staff has helped make your journey, particularly special or if you wish to leave a gratuity it will be evenly divided by the entire crew. Any gratuities you wish to give are entirely at your discretion.
